"AB de Villiers only had personal records in the IPL" - Gautam Gambhir lashes out at AB de Villiers that it's very easy to score in the Chinnaswami Stadium

It’s not uncommon for former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir to make headlines for his outspoken criticism of the sport and its practitioners. This time, Gambhir compared the contributions of two renowned batsmen, AB de Villiers and Suresh Raina, to the IPL and international cricket.

The comparison was made in terms of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) results and how they affected the team, however, so newcomers could be confused. Gambhir claims that Raina, of the Chennai Super Kings, has outperformed the RCB legend during their careers. In addition, the ex-player who was formerly an IPL captain noted that Raina has won four IPL titles but de Villiers has never won a single one.

He continued by saying it seemed like the Proteas star just played for himself and not the team’s goals. The southpaw has had a greater influence and is more well-respected than de Villiers because of this.

What did Gautam Gambhir say about AB de Villiers?

“AB de Villiers only had personal records in the IPL. Anybody could have scored runs in Chinnaswamy stadium,” the veteran opener reportedly told Star Sports during an interview. It was during a discussion about the ongoing series between India and Australia, Gambhir came up with his views on de Villiers.

It’s important to note, though, that supporters’ reactions to Gambhir’s statement are mixed. When asked their thoughts on the former Indian opener’s comments, some fans defended him, while others trolled him. De Villiers has appeared in 184 matches in the IPL, scoring 5162 runs at an impressive average of 39.71. While playing for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore between 2008 and 2021, he scored three centuries and forty-fifties in the Indian Premier League.

Raina, on the other hand, has had equally stellar performances. He has played 205 matches for the CSK team, scoring one century and 38 half-centuries with an impressive strike rate of 136.76 and an average of 32.52. In addition, Raina has earned the title of “Mr. IPL” from his legion of devoted followers because of his remarkable reliability as a player.
