The future of experienced player Jordi Alba has been cast into doubt only minutes after Sergio Busquets announced his exit from FC Barcelona. According to SPORT’s David Bernabeu Reverter, Alba’s representatives met with Barcelona FC director Mateu Alemany today.
According to the latest information, Barça’s goal with Alba is to negotiate a mutual termination of his contract so that the experienced left-back may leave the club with a letter of independence. Alba is no longer Barcelona’s starting left-back, as Alejandro Balde has risen to the top of the depth chart.
With Inigo Martinez coming in as a left-footed centre-back, Xavi will have the option of playing Marcos Alonso in his natural position next season. This would decrease the preference for Alba. Due to postponed payments and his incremental deal signed during the Josep Maria Bartomeu period, the 34-year-old’s salaries next season will allegedly soar to a whopping €38 million.
Big Decision Taken By FC Barcelona On The Future Of Jordi Alba
The club is under pressure to reduce their payroll costs and could never afford to pay Alba that much. Therefore, they are negotiating a settlement with the player to end his contract amicably. While the Spaniard has been cool to the idea in the past, with Busquets leaving and Lionel Messi perhaps not returning, things may be changing.
Alba could consider leaving Barcelona in the summer because of this. If the fullback does not agree to a significant pay cut, the club will not be able to include him on the wage bill and remain in compliance with Financial Fair Play standards. Now, we wait to see whether Alba is prepared to negotiate a lesser salary or if he will voluntarily go at the conclusion of the season.
