Deepak Chahar discussed the qualities that make the Chennai Super Kings stand out as a franchise in front of the IPL 2023 championship game on May 28 against the Gujarat Titans. As a result of MS Dhoni’s leadership, the team has reached its tenth final in the league and is on the brink of capturing its fifth championship, tied for most all-time with the Mumbai Indians.
Prior to that, Deepak Chahar had been candid about the team’s dynamic, saying that the freedom to pursue individual goals is a key factor in CSK’s success as a club. The 30-year-old also spoke highly of MS Dhoni’s contribution to the team’s success in integrating its younger players.
Chahar mentioned during the eighth season of Breakfast with Champions that the environment in the team was unique. He explained that everything was optional, and no one would impose any obligations regarding practice or gym sessions. Being professional cricketers, it was their individual responsibility to determine what suited them best. Whether they chose to practice, delay it until the next day, or even skip it entirely, the decision rested with them.

Chahar emphasized that despite this leniency, performing on the field was crucial, and everyone was aware of it. He added that even in the event of a match loss, there was no blame assigned, and even Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) refrained from pressuring anyone. The atmosphere carried no burdensome expectations or stress.
Chahar mentioned that the second reason behind his affinity for the CSK team was Mahi bhai (referring to MS Dhoni). Upon joining the team, Chahar observed that during team dinners, players would be seated at separate tables—seniors at one table, overseas players at another, and juniors at yet another. It was common for new players to feel hesitant to speak up. However, Chahar noted that Mahi bhai always made a point to sit with the juniors, without fail.
Although he got off to a rocky start this season, Chahar has gradually built up steam and taken 12 wickets in nine outings. The pacer will need to perform at a high level, just like he did in the first qualifying match, if CSK is to prevail.
