“Don’t give your wicket to a debutant”, A fan’s worst fear comes true as Matthew Kuhnemann, playing his debut test match, dismissed Virat Kohli in New Delhi

Virat Kohli

Every bowler hopes to take the wicket of Indian batsman Virat Kohli, and if that day happens on one’s debut, it’s all the more memorable. Matthew Kuhnemann, a left-arm spinner for Australia, earned the coveted removal of Virat Kohli in his first game.

In the 50th over of the game, Kohli was out to the third ball bowled by Kuhnemann. But the removal was contentious, and Kohli was not pleased with the outcome.

After Australia’s humiliating loss in the first Test, they were forced to call up Kuhnemann. Even though Ashton Agar was already on the roster, he was selected into the starting lineup ahead of him. Getting Kohli out in his debut Test is an experience Kuhnemann won’t soon forget.

Being Kohli’s home ground, and since he has a stellar record out here, the Kotla fans were shocked by his dismissal. A spectator was observed during the game with a sign that said, “Don’t give your wicket to a debutant (Debutant ko wkt gift mat karna King).”

Kohli simply surrendered his wicket to the rookie, confirming the worst fears of the worried fan. It should be mentioned that Kohli’s Test cricket record is not excellent against debutants, as he has been dismissed 20 times by them. Kohli has been dismissed more times than any other player in Test cricket history by a player making their first appearance at the crease.

With 35 dismissals, Sachin Tendulkar is far by the leader, while Mahela Jayawardene, Mahmudullah, and Mohammad Azharuddin all tie for second with 23. Kohli will not be pleased with the stat and will work to improve it in future games. Before, he was also eliminated by Todd Murphy, a rookie player.
