India’s experienced opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan was dropped from the ODI set-up for the three-match ODI series against the Sri Lankan cricket team, a move that surprised the fans in the Indian cricket fraternity.

Shikhar Dhawan has been a vital contributor to Team India in the 50-over format for several years now and has also played vital innings for the team in the ICC events. The experienced cricketer was last seen playing the ODI series against the Bangladesh cricket team.

The southpaw had a dismal outing as he scored a series of low scores of 7, 8 and 3 runs in the first, second and third ODI against the Tigers. While everyone expected him to make the cut for the ODI series against Sri Lanka, he was dropped by the board.

Shikhar Dhawan dropped from the Indian ODI team

India will be hosting three different teams namely Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia for the home series. India will play three T20Is and three ODIs against Sri Lanka, with the first T20I slated to be played on January 3 (Tuesday) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The tour comes to a close on January 15 in Trivandrum. After that, India will host New Zealand for 3 ODIs followed by 3 T20Is and it will be interesting to see if the veteran cricketer will be named in the ODI series against the New Zealand cricket team.

After the home series against New Zealand, India will invite Australia for the four-match Test series followed by the three-match ODI series. Shikhar Dhawan has represented the national cricket team in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20Is wherein he scored 2315, 6793 and 1759 runs in the respective formats.

It is no secret that ODI is the favourite format for Dhawan as he averages 44.1 which is comparatively higher than the other two formats. Notably, he has slammed as many as 17 centuries and 39 fifties to his name.
