Raheem Sterling is almost done with his move from Manchester City to Chelsea. He has agreed to a deal that will make him their highest-paid player.
Thomas Tuchel, the coach of the Blues, is a big fan of Sterling, and the club’s new owner, Todd Boehly, moved quickly to make a deal for the English player.
Sterling has one year left on his City contract, and talks about a fee are still going on. The fee is said to be around £45 million.
Since Romelu Lukaku is now playing for Inter Milan on loan, N’Golo Kante, a midfielder, is the highest-paid player at Stamford Bridge. He makes about £290,000 per week. ESPN has heard from sources that Sterling will make more than that.
Raheem Sterling is close to a move to Chelsea
Chelsea hope to make a deal soon, and there is hope that Sterling will be able to join them on their preseason trip to the US, which starts on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola would have liked to keep the 27-year-old winger, but he talked to City at the end of last season and agreed that a move was best.
Last season, Sterling started 23 games, but his impact in big games went down. He didn’t start either leg of City’s semi-final with Real Madrid in the Champions League, and he started only six of their last 11 Premier League games.
By getting Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, Guardiola has made his team’s forward line stronger. Julian Alvarez, who was signed in January and sent back to River Plate on loan, is expected to play a big role next season.
What’s next for Chelsea?
Chelsea came in third place in the Premier League and lacked a leader up front. The £97.5 million transfer of Lukaku turned out to be a disaster.
In a controversial interview in December, the Belgium international said that he didn’t like the way Tuchel played, and his relationship with the fans never got better.
After making a deal to go back to Inter, where he won Serie A in 2021, Lukaku said that he had been in touch with manager Simeone Inzaghi all year.
“The love of the fans and my teammates, but also the chance to work with the coach. I kept in touch with him the whole season before last,” he said.
Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, who played centre back for Chelsea, have also left as free agents. They are reportedly working on a deal for Matthijs de Ligt, a star player for Juventus, but Bayern Munich is still interested.
