"I am not convinced that Shreyas Iyer is a good player of spin" - Ian Chappell does not agree to the views of Shreyas Iyer being a good player of spin

The former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has spoken out against the current Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer, criticizing him for his lacklustre performance on Day 1 of the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shreyas Iyer struggled at the crease, and he came out to bat at number five. Just two deliveries into his innings, Aussie spinner Matthew Kuhnemann bowled him for a duck. India’s first innings total of 109 runs was the lowest in the match till now.

The former Australian player was quite direct in his criticism of Shreyas Iyer. According to him, the Indian batting lineup seemed quite wobbly on Day 1, allowing the Australian spinners to easily get the best of them thanks to the changing surface in Indore. He saw parallels between India’s batting and Australia’s poor batting in the first two Tests.

What did Ian Chappel say about Shreyas Iyer?

Cheteshwar Pujara is very jumpy. I think right through the series he has been very jumpy. I keep hearing that Shreyas Iyer is a very good player of spin bowling, but I haven’t seen it yet, and I’m not convinced that he is. To me, he is a bit of a panicker,” the 79-year-old said while speaking to ESPNcricinfo.

Afterwards, he made some definitive statements concerning Shreyas Iyer. Chappell said he didn’t want to believe the widespread opinion that the 28-year-old was an outstanding spin player. This is because Iyer had yet to provide him with any convincing evidence to the contrary. He blew his first opportunity on day one.

“There are some players in the Indian side that haven’t convinced me that they’re good players of spin bowling. I thought that the Australians spooked India early on. A couple of things happened with the pitch. The Australian spinners bowled very accurately. But what we saw was Australian-type batting from the Indians,” he added.
