“I think India lost the plot” – Ravi Shastri reveals where India lost the plot during the fourth test in Ahmedabad

"I think India lost the plot" - Ravi Shastri reveals where India lost the plot during the fourth test in Ahmedabad

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was blunt in his assessment of the Rohit Sharma-led squad’s ‘overconfidence’ after they lost the third Test of the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy. There was a surprising turn of events when the Indian captain responded by calling Shastri an outsider at the press conference before the fourth Test. Shastri, though, continued to criticize the captain’s choices.

Shastri poked fun at India again on the opening day of the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, questioning the captain’s decision to take a new ball at the close of the day’s play after India’s poor performance with the ball. He thinks it helped the visiting team a great deal, which ultimately swung the lead back to Australia.

Since guys like Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami aren’t young enough to concern the Australian batters with a second new ball, Shastri said India lost the plot at that particular moment. He thinks the bowlers were too worn out from the day’s play to make good use of the new ball to pressure the opponents.

What did Ravi Shastri say?

“I think India lost the plot last night. Taking the new ball was not the right thing to do considering Umesh is 35, Shami is not getting any younger. They had bowled a lot. They were getting tired. A shorter burst with two overs is fine. But taking the new ball as early as that let Australia get away,” Shastri said on commentary during Day two as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Although the Narendra Modi Stadium pitch favours batsmen, Ravi Shastri thinks that Rohit Sharma should take this opportunity to demonstrate his leadership and resourcefulness. He said that the Bombay native is talented and may succeed in cricket if he were given more practice at batting on actual pitches.

As India has spent much of Sharma’s leadership on rank turners, which may end a match in three days, Shastri has dubbed the current Test an educational experience for the Indian team’s captain. Sharma is anticipated to learn some valuable lessons in Test captaincy from the batting pitch and circumstances in Ahmedabad.
