“I’m not going to be MS Dhoni as a captain” – Faf du Plessis talks about his captaincy style for RCB ahead of the IPL 2023 season

"I’m not going to be MS Dhoni as a captain" - Faf du Plessis talks about his captaincy style for RCB ahead of the IPL 2023 season

With Virat Kohli’s departure as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Faf du Plessis was named the team’s new leader in front of the 2022 Indian Premier League season. In his debut season as RCB captain, the former South African skipper has shown to be an outstanding leader. In addition, he led the squad to the playoffs of the Indian Premier League.

In addition to being one of the best fielders of all time, du Plessis holds the record for most victories by a captain across all versions of the game. The Proteas great discussed his interest in captaining the team and shared insights gleaned from conversations with previous and present IPL leaders.

What did Faf du Plessis say about Stephen Flemming and MS Dhoni as leaders?

du Plessis also took the time to express his gratitude to Chennai Super Kings for giving him a shot when he was only a kid. One of the best leaders he’s ever worked with, according to the 38-year-old cricketer, is CSK coach Stephen Fleming. He also spoke about his time working with MS Dhoni, praising the skipper for his “amazing” leadership skills.

“I think what was really good for me to go through was, even with all of that, the conviction that I am not going to be Graeme Smith as a captain, I’m not going to be Stephen Fleming as a captain, I’m not going to be MS Dhoni as a captain. In order for me to be true to who I am as a person, I need to be me. Because if you’re not being you, then people will see through it, maybe not when you’re doing well but definitely when you are under pressure, or underperforming, the real you will reveal itself,” he said while speaking on RCB Podcast Season 2.
