IPL 2023: T20 Records and Stats at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali

The Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali is the home to Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Punjab Kings. Since the inception of the IPL, Punjab Kings have featured in 93 home matches. The franchise has won 44 games at home while losing 49. However, they will look to make amends with their new-look side in the ongoing season under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan.

Punjab Kings began their IPL 2023 season with a 7 runs (DLS method) win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their inaugural match. But they slumped to a six-wicket loss to defending champions Gujarat Titans in their next home game. Their next home fixtures in Mohali are against Royal Challengers Bangalore (April 20), Lucknow Super Giants (April 28) and Mumbai Indians (May 3). It should be noted that the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala will be the second venue for Punjab Kings. 

History of Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali

Popularly referred to as the Mohali Stadium, the ground was built by Geetanshu Kalra and holds a seating capacity of 27,000 spectators. The stadium’s name is a homage to former BCCI president and ex-PCA president Inderjit Singh Bindra. Interestingly, the floodlight at the stadium is designed at a lower level compared to other stadiums to avoid turbulence to aircraft at the nearby Chandigarh airport. 

Historically, the stadium became the 19th Test venue in India. It hosted three matches in the 2011 World Cup, including the nail-biting semi-finals between India and Pakistan. The stadium hosted its maiden match in 1993, where India and South Africa faced off in the Hero Cup on November 22. Meanwhile, the first Test was played between India and South Africa on December 10, 1994.

The pitch conditions at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, have changed over the years. Initially, when India took on the West Indies in a Test match in 1994, the visiting fast bowlers took advantage of the lightning-quick wicket to thrash the hosts by 243 runs. In the coming years, the wicket offered good pace and bounce. But recently, the wicket has slowed down and is good for batting. The target of 180-odd runs is chasable at the venue.
