IPL media rights auction: Disney Star retains TV rights, digital package bagged by Viacom18

The e-auction for the IPL media rights kicked off on June 12, and two separate parties have bagged the broadcast rights for TV and digital streaming respectively. Star India’s successful bid of 57.5 crores per game ensured that they retained the TV package. New entrants Viacom, led by JV group picked up the digital rights package for 50 crore.

Package A of TV broadcast for the Indian subcontinent has been sold at Rs 23,575 crore, equivalent to Rs 57.5 crore per match. The next category, Package B of Digital Rights for India is sold at Rs 20,500 crore, which totals Rs 50 crore per match.

In 2017, Star paid Rs 16,000 crore for the TV and digital rights for a period of five years. The media rights value has inflated since, with a growth rate of two and a half times what media giant Star paid for the package.
