Reports indicate that Memphis Depay might want to leave Barcelona in the January transfer window after falling out of favor at Camp Nou
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claims that Memphis Depay has decided to stay with Barcelona. The Dutch forward hopes to revive his career by leaving Spotify Camp Nou as a free agent in the next January transfer window.
In July 2021, with his contract at Lyon having expired, Memphis Depay made a Bosman transfer to Barcelona. The 28-year-old also had a successful first season, finishing as the Catalan club’s joint-top scorer. Since then, though, things have only gotten worse for the player, whom Barcelona hoped to offload this summer.
After the summer transfer window closed, the Dutch forward found himself at the bottom of the pecking order at Spotify Camp Nou. This season, Depay has only played three times for Barcelona and has scored once. And ever since he hurt his hamstring during the international break, he hasn’t played for the Blaugrana.
Depay has asked Barcelona if he may return to the Netherlands to finish his recovery now that he’s healed from his injury. The former Manchester United forward has been seeking clearance to return to his native country for some time, and he finally got it this past weekend.
The Catalan giants were without their 28-year-old star against Osasuna earlier this week. Moreover, Depay hopes to leave Barcelona during the next January transfer window. Because he hopes to earn a transfer bonus from his new club, the player is eager to leave Spotify Camp Nou as a free agent.
After how Barcelona treated him this season, the Dutch national team player did not want them to benefit from his transfer. Several Premier League teams have shown interest in signing him, so he may not be short of potential suitors.
As an alternative, a transfer to Juventus, which had previously fallen through in the summer, may be viable due to renewed interest from the Serie A powerhouse. But it remains to be seen whether Barcelona would agree to allow him depart as a free agent.
