Several years ago, MS Dhoni was the captain of the Indian cricket team across all three formats. Although questions were raised on split captaincy, the team management decided to stick to MS Dhoni in all three formats.

MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket in December 2014 which paved the way for Virat Kohli to become the Test captain. However, the team management’s decision to let Virat Kohli become the Test captain proved to be a masterstroke.

He went on to become the most successful captain for India in Test cricket. Under his captaincy, Team India won 40 games out of 68 games, losing 17 games and playing out for a draw on 11 occasions. Kohli led the team in ODIs and T20Is from 2017 to 2021.

After Virat Kohli stepped down as captain from all formats, Rohit Sharma took charge as the skipper across formats. However, under his full-time captaincy, Team India lost both Asia Cup 2022 and T20 World Cup 2022.

Following India’s exit from the showpiece event in Australia, the BCCI has apparently decided not to play the senior cricketers in the T20Is for the time being as they want them to focus on playing more One Day Internationals, keeping in mind that the ICC ODI WC 2023 will be held in India in the October-November window.

As things stand, Hardik Pandya has been leading the Indian cricket team in T20Is in Rohit Sharma’s absence. Recently, the BCCI also named Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of the ODI set-up, which gives us a clear hint that he would be the future ODI captain.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer, Abhishek Nayar said Shreyas Iyer can be a good candidate for the future Indian skipper. Shreyas Iyer possesses good leadership abilities and many even told him that he is a born leader. The Kolkata Knight Riders captain is not named in the T20I series against Sri Lanka and will be back for the ODI series on January 10.

A future india captain should be able to play short ball properly, when we tour overseas you cant change captain because he didn't have any clue against short ball which ever the pace the bowler is bowling, he is one of the poor player of short ball i have ever seen
