“So finally, I had to ask people like him (Tendulkar) to intervene” – Virender Sehwag recalls how Sachin Tendulkar saved him during a Test match

"So finally, I had to ask people like him (Tendulkar) to intervene" - Virender Sehwag recalls how Sachin Tendulkar saved him during a Test match

Former opening batter Virender Sehwag grew up idolizing the great Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, just like many other Indian players. In 1992, when Tendulkar made his World Cup debut, Sehwag was captivated by the ‘Master Blaster’s’ skill and began to look up to him as a role model.

When he finally had the chance to meet him in 2001, he thought it was a dream come true. Instead, he got a handshake and a whole lot of disappointment. Sehwag became one of the most aggressive hitters in the game during his playing days, and Tendulkar had to take notice.

In the years that followed, the two got along so well that Tendulkar eventually became tired of his constant chatting in the locker room.

In an interview, Sehwag said that he had struck a pact with his cricketing hero, Tendulkar, that if Shewag scored his third Test triple century, Tendulkar will do one of his important work.

Sehwag recalled how helpful Tendulkar was as a veteran player in the team in counselling the youngsters and even helping them take captaincy-related choices during an interview with prominent YouTuber Vikram Sathaye on his talk program What The Duck.

What did Virender Sehwag say about Sachin Tendulkar?

Even after he was selected captain of the Indian Test squad with no prior experience in that role, the “Master Blaster” stepped in to calm things down when things became heated.

Sehwag remembered that when Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh were bowling together during the Test, he had no idea how to persuade them that they needed to switch bowlers. Although he lacked the confidence to remove Kumble from the attack owing to the latter’s seniority, Harbhajan would often question him why he wasn’t switching to bowling from Kumble’s end.

So Sehwag had to go to the senior member of the group for help, and when Tendulkar stepped in and calmed things down, Sehwag could finally relax.

“I couldn’t say anything to Anil bhai, when I went towards Sardar (Harbhajan Singh) he started yelling as to why I’m not asking Anil Kumble to leave the ball. So finally, I had to ask people like him (Tendulkar) to intervene,” remarked Sehwag.
