Since all-rounder Ben Stokes and new red-ball coach Brendon McCullum assumed control of the England Test team in June of last year, the squad has been on an unstoppable winning streak. Under the new era, England has won 10 of 11 Tests played, and they seem to be on track to sweep the Australians in their backyard during the Ashes series in June and July of this year.

Although saying he’ll be focusing on the Test squad, Stokes nonetheless signed up for the IPL 2023 auction, where the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) paid a whopping 16.25 crore to get his services. One of cricket’s all-time greats, nevertheless, decided against playing every game.

Stokes has pledged to be ready for the one-off Test against Ireland, which begins on June 1 at Lord’s. This may be a major blow to the MS Dhoni-led team. There are six other English players on full contracts in the IPL in addition to Stokes, and five of them are in the Test squad. Some of the biggest names in cricket will be participating in the 16th season of the lucrative league, including Joe Root (Rajasthan Royals), Mark Wood (Lucknow Super Giants), Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, and Sam Curran (Punjab Kings), Jofra Archer (Mumbai Indians), and Harry Brook (Sunrisers Hyderabad).

Stokes said that the other players should decide for themselves whether they want to skip the Ireland Test since the Ashes is definitely more important than the one-off game. After a 267-run victory at Mount Maunganui, Stokes will be hungry to finish off the two-game series against New Zealand.
