“This is what a little complacency, a little bit of overconfidence can do where you take things for granted” – Ravi Shastri slams the Indian team for losing the third test match due to over confidence

"This is what a little complacency, a little bit of overconfidence can do where you take things for granted" - Ravi Shastri slams the Indian team for losing the third test match due to over confidence

Former head coach Ravi Shastri has blamed complacency and overconfidence on the Indian team for their humiliating loss to Australia in the third Test played in Indore. The Rohit Sharma-led team batted poorly, accumulating just 109 and 163 runs respectively over two innings.

Yet, Shastri thinks the Indian squad was complacent and let their guard down throughout the game. The team will look after the situation before the fourth Test in Ahmedabad. According to him, some of the shots that the Indian batsmen played were fairly terrible.

What did Ravi Shastri say?

Shastri said: “This is what a little complacency, a little bit of overconfidence can do where you take things for granted, you drop guard and this game will bring you down,” Shastri said on air. “I think it was a combination of all these things when you actually cast your mind back to the first innings, see some of the shots played, see some of the over-eagerness to try and dominate in these conditions. You reflect back, take a step back or two to analyse.”

One of the commentators, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden, said that a few of the Indian players weren’t giving their all since they were fighting for a starting berth. Hayden emphasized the value of “punching beyond one’s weight” by using Travis Head as an example.

As a result of India’s loss in the third Test of the IND versus AUS Test series, the final of the World Test Championship now seems to be between Australia and India or Australia and Sri Lanka.

India was favoured to sweep Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series after taking the first two games. In contrast, the visitors staged a resounding recovery in the third Test, dominating the Indians in their own stadium by chasing down a paltry goal of 76 runs in the fourth innings of the Indore Test.
