“Throwing wickets away like this way is just painful to my eyes” – Twitter reacts as Virat Kohli dismissed for 13 in the second innings of the third test in Indore

"Throwing wickets away like this way is just painful to my eyes" - Twitter reacts as Virat Kohli dismissed for 13 in the second innings of the third test in Indore

It’s no longer news that Virat Kohli is having trouble in Test matches. In the third Test, played at Holkar stadium in Indore, he scored 35 runs. He was dismissed for only 13 in the second innings. Many of Kohli’s supporters don’t recognize this version of him. Kohli has battled in the previous three years, suffering series after series and game after game.

Don’t forget that it’s been almost three years since he last hit a century in a Test. In the 2019 November match against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens, he scored his last Test century. There has to be some introspection into why Kohli has stalled at 27 Test tons while his contemporaries like Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson have excelled.

From the year 2021, Root has scored 12 hundred in Tests. Both Williamson has scored twice, while Smith has scored four more times. Kohli has zero of them.

Kohli has struggled to get runs even while batting in his own stadium. Since 2021, in 10 matches over 15 innings, he has scored 387 runs, including only 2 fifties, for a dismal batting average of 25.80. He has an average of 48.80.

The 34-year-old also had a tough time scoring runs in white-ball cricket in the previous year until he made a century against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022. After that, he went on to score the most runs (296) in the T20 World Cup the same year. Yet, Kohli still has trouble performing well in Test matches.

In his last nine innings, he had the following stats in Bangladesh and India: 1, 19*, 23, 1, 12, 44, 20, 22, 13. Most of his wickets throughout these innings came when he played against spin. Yet, it is also true that Kohli has not given any masterclass in pace-friendly conditions like England, or South Africa. But, it is unclear how much longer the squad would continue to support the underperforming Indian star.
