According to reports, Tottenham is trying to add to its defence options in January, and Stefan de Vrij is at the top of their want list
Football Insider claims that Spurs are the frontrunners to recruit Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij, 30 years old and currently playing for Serie A powerhouse Inter Milan, during the January transfer window.
The 30-year-old central defender’s contract with Inter Milan expires in the summer, and he may be available at a low price in the next January transfer window. Not even the biggest clubs in Serie A have been able to reach an extension agreement with the player. If they didn’t cash in on him by the middle of the campaign, they may lose support.
Since joining Inter Milan, Stefan de Vrij has become one of the league’s top defenders. He also has the potential to be a solid addition to the Tottenham defence. Reports indicate that negotiations with the Spurs to sign him have already begun.
Given the play of Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet, and Davinson Sanchez this season, Antonio Conte’s desire to add a central defender is understandable. All three of Tottenham’s defenders have been disappointing, so Conte should find a good replacement for Cristian Romero.
After reaching the quarterfinals, the Netherlands were eliminated from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Furthermore, de Vrij will likely go back to Italy shortly. It remains to be seen whether he is interested in transferring to Tottenham during the next January transfer window.
The 30-year-old may be interested in reuniting with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte, with whom he worked at Inter Milan. Moreover, the Tottenham manager is familiar with the player and may be able to get the most out of him at Spurs.
The Serie A powerhouses have been struggling financially in recent months, and many important players have been linked with exits. Whether or if Inter can recuperate any money for de Vrij in the next weeks is an intriguing question.
The spurs need to make a few shrewd additions to their roster in January if they are to maintain their push for a top-four finish. Stefan de Vrij would be a great addition, and his Premier League experience would allow him to contribute right away.
