After Brendon McCullum’s legendary 158 in the first season of the IPL in 2008, it took the Kolkata Knight Riders a full 15 years to get another hundred. On Sunday, April 16, 2023, however, Venkatesh Iyer broke the curse with a blazing 104-run knock for KKR in their Indian Premier League encounter against the Mumbai Indians at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Iyer made a celebratory gesture upon hitting the three-figure threshold, which caused KKR co-owner and daughter of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, to explode in the stands.

Taking on MI rookie Arjun Tendulkar for a six and a four in his second over was a promising start to the innings, but in the fourth over of the game, he hurt his leg and was seen writhing in agony. The physiotherapists arrived quickly, and a painkiller was administered to Iyer.

Lacking help from the other end, Iyer found it difficult to run between the wickets and instead opted to trade in boundaries. The KKR star smacked 104 runs off 51 balls, including five fours and nine sixes, to score his first IPL century and the first for his side in 15 seasons.

Iyer bowed to the ground in his unique celebration of hitting the three-figure milestone and pointing towards the KKR dugout. When Suhana saw Iyer’s incredible achievement, she cheered and applauded wildly from the stands.

With just Iyer’s century to rely on, the visitors reached 185 for six. After their 232/2 in 2019 and their 187/5 in 2016, this is KKR’s third-highest total against Mumbai Indians in 32 IPL matches.
