“We have had this heartbreak before” – Virender Sehwag compares Harmanpreet Kaur’s run-out with MS Dhoni’s run-out in the 2019 World Cup semi final

"We have had this heartbreak before" - Virender Sehwag compares Harmanpreet Kaur's run-out with MS Dhoni's run-out in the 2019 World Cup semi final

Harmanpreet Kaur, captain of the India women’s side, batted well after a rough spell in the first semi-final match against Australia at the ICC T20 World Cup 2023 in Cape Town, although her team ultimately lost.

Kaur, 33-year-old, was in complete command of the situation, notably during her 69-run fourth-wicket stand with batter Jemimah Rodrigues, which turned the tide of the game in their favour (43). In spite of the fact that the Australians were able to get back into the game after Rodrigues’ departure at the midway point of a 173-run chase, Kaur’s absence had maintained the thrilling encounter in a state of equilibrium.

Kaur was completing a second run on the fourth delivery of the 15th over when India required 41 runs off 33 balls with six wickets in hand.

If Kaur’s bat hadn’t gotten caught in the ground at Newlands just before the popping crease, she would have reached the striker’s end with easy after sweeping Australia spinner Georgia Wareham with all her might. After scoring his tenth Twenty20 International half-century, the Indian captain was spotted angry in the locker room because he was unable to approach the crease.

What did Virender Sehwag say?

Ex-Indian batsman Virender Sehwag was among the many spectators who were brought back to the moment when former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out during India’s semi-final match against New Zealand at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Dhoni’s run-out at the striker’s end gave the BlackCaps a huge edge, and they went on to win by 18 runs at Old Trafford, where India’s hopes had been riding on him.

Saddened by both firings, Sehwag vented his frustrations on Twitter by drawing parallels between the two. Sehwag, like the rest of us, was impressed by the Indian team’s efforts and also praised Australia for making it to the T20 World Cup final for the eighth time in a row.

On Sunday, at the same site, the defending champions Australia will take on the victor of the other semi-final, which will be played between England and South Africa.
