In anticipation of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Rohit Sharma said that the team will be changing tactics in the fourth Test against Australia. India will be guaranteed a spot in the WTC final with a victory in the Indore Test, but they will have one more red-ball match before the June WTC final, which will take place in Ahmedabad.
The home-field advantage helped India to a 2-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, which they now lead unassailably. Nevertheless, on June 7-11, the WTC Final will be played in London’s The Oval. India will be playing in very different circumstances, thus the team’s management is hoping to utilize the Ahmedabad Test as a dry run.
To counter Australia, India’s side used three spinners and two fast bowlers in the first two games. Nevertheless, they may replace one of their spinners with a pace all-rounder, most likely Shardul Thakur, in preparation for the WTC Final. Shardul is in the plans of the management, according to Rohit, and the team would most likely try a new tactic in the next Ahmedabad Test.
What did Rohit Sharma say?
“There is definitely a possibility of that. We have already spoken about it. We need to get the guys ready for it. The important one is Shardul Thakur, because he comes into the planning for us. We don’t know how ready he is since he has just gotten married.
We don’t know how many overs he has bowled. But that thought process is definitely there. If we do what we do here and get the result we want, we might think of doing something different in Ahmedabad for sure,” Rohit said in a pre-match presser.
Nonetheless, Rohit also urged fans to be patient till India confirms its spot in the WTC final. But, he acknowledged that neither side would have home-field advantage in the final since England is out.
“Just speaking of it from the outside… I don’t think England is going to qualify, so both teams who are going to play the final will be neutral teams. It’s going to be exciting. There’s no home advantage, no conditions advantage. You know India has played a lot of cricket in England over the last couple of years. Australia have also played a lot of cricket there,” he said.
“Sri Lanka and South Africa are also in the mix. They probably have played a lot of cricket there as well. It’s not going to be alien conditions as such [to those] who’ll make the final. It’ll be a good contest between the two teams, whoever those teams are,” Sharma concluded.
In all likelihood, India and Australia will face off in the WTC final, putting the latter in a precarious position. Australia has to win both of their forthcoming home matches against India (starting on March 8) and hope that New Zealand beats Sri Lanka (beginning on March 8).
