"Well deserved man he upped his game tremendously in the past 2 years" - Twitter reacts as Dasun Shanaka deservedly earns IPL contract for the first time

Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka’s meteoric rise in international cricket is well-documented. He picked up the tricks and trades and upgraded himself to a considerable extent, especially in the last couple of years.

Although he struggled to produce the right spark in the initial stages of his career, he got better over time. Today, he is serving as the captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team. Besides his captaincy traits, he has also been chipping in with all-round performance.

The current limited-overs captain of the Sri Lankan national cricket team operates as an all-rounder. He plies his trade as a right-handed batter and a right-arm medium-fast bowler. He represented the national cricket team in 6 Tests, 50 ODIs and 86 T20Is.

Dasun Shanaka scored 140, 1098 and 1329 runs in the respective formats. He scored one fifty in Tests, two centuries and three fifties in ODIs and five fifties in the shortest format of the game.

The 31-year-old put his name forward in the IPL 2023 mini-auction for his base price of INR 50 lakh. Unfortunately, he failed to attract the bidders at the auction and not even one franchise showed any interest to sign him.

The fans also expressed their disappointment on Twitter soon after Dasun Shanaka went unsold at the auction. However, a golden opportunity came knocking on the cricketer’s door as he deservedly earned an IPL contract for the first time.

Gujarat Titans showcased a great deal of interest to bring him to their arsenal soon after Kane Williamson was ruled out of the sixteenth edition of the Indian Premier League. New Zealand international, Kane Williamson sustained a right knee injury while fielding against Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener in Ahmedabad.

Dasun Shanaka has now replaced Kane Williamson for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023. It remains to be seen how he will go about his work in the ongoing edition.
