“Where are those people who were saying IPL isnt helping India?”, Twitter reacts as Kane Williamson is ruled out of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup

"Where are those people who were saying IPL isnt helping India?", Twitter reacts as Kane Williamson is ruled out of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup

Scans confirmed on Thursday that New Zealand ODI captain Kane Williamson had injured his anterior cruciate ligament while fielding in an IPL 2023 match, thereby ruling him out of the World Cup scheduled for October-November in India. Williamson will have surgery in the next three weeks, and because he will need a long time to heal, he will not be able to participate in the major event.

Williamson was hurt trying to catch Ruturaj Gaikwad in the 13th over of Chennai Super Kings’ innings in the first game of the Indian Premier League 2023 at Ahmedabad. Two runs were saved for Gujarat Titans, but he could be seen grimacing in discomfort against the outfield fence. Eventually, he was helped off the field after receiving immediate care on the bench. Sai Sudharsan, an Impact Player, came in for the veteran right-hander, who did not return to the game.

GT announced Williamson’s elimination from the event a few days later. His spot on the team will be filled by captain Dasun Shanaka for the rest of the competition.

Williamson returned home by plane, and tests revealed the full extent of his condition. Williamson wanted to thank everyone for their kind wishes after hearing the news.

Despite the team’s diminished chances of winning the World Cup, Williamson pledged to do anything he could to cheer them on. In Williamson’s absence, Tom Latham seems to be the favourite to captain New Zealand in the World Cup.

“I look forward to doing what I can to support Gary and the team over the next few months,” said Kane Williamson.

“The standard rehabilitation timelines mean that Williamson is now unlikely to be fit and available for selection at this year’s ICC ODI Cricket World Cup in India,” said NZC in a release.
