There is no respite to the downfall of English football giants Chelsea in the 2022-23 season despite a busy summer transfer window. The London club splashed more than €300 million in January to sign eight players, including World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez for a record fee of €121m. Joining the Argentine in the club were David Datro Fofana, Mykhailo Mudryk, Malo Gusto, Joao Felix, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, and Noni Madueke.
The signings made by Chelsea in their summer and January transfer window totaled more than €600 million, but the Blues still find themselves in an embarrassing position, sitting at 11th position in the Premier League after their latest 0-2 loss to Brentford. Incidentally, Chelsea has not won a single Premier League match under their interim manager Frank Lampard, after the sacking of Graham Potter.
Under Potter’s tutelage, Chelsea signed some key players, but the club managed to win only 12 matches while registering eight draws and 11 losses in his 31-game stint in the Premier League. The poor run of form continued after Thomas Tuchel was sacked in September 2022 after their first six Premier League fixtures. Chelsea won three and two under Tuchel at the beginning of the new season.
The six-time Premier League champions reportedly shelled out £13 million in compensation to Potter while the former manager Tuchel was handed a £13 million pay-out along with an additional £2 million to his backroom staff after the sacking. Incidentally, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is reportedly earning £70,000 a week as interim manager. Given that Lampard joined the club on Matchday 30, his total salary for the entire season will be £560,000. However, his first game as a manager this season resulted in disappointment, as the Blues were blanked 0-1 in an away fixture to Wolves.
In the 2022-23 season, Chelsea has a list of 32 active players on their roster. Their total annual salaries sum up to £207,090,000. That brings the total amount shelled out by Chelsea in the 2022-23 season, including their active players, managers, and backroom staff, to £235,790,00.
Chelsea has registered an underwhelming 10 wins, nine draws, and 13 losses from their 31 fixtures in the Premier League 2022-23. The value of each win in the season is £2,357,900. The club is scheduled to face league leaders Arsenal in an away fixture on May 3.
