The butterfly effect refers to the theory that even seemingly insignificant actions may have far-reaching consequences. The name derives from the idea that anything as little as a butterfly fluttering its wings in one region of the planet may have far-reaching consequences, such as a storm in another.

For example, when Virat Kohli was only 17 years old, the butterfly effect changed the course of his life. Now, he is widely regarded as one of the finest batters in the history of cricket.

In the middle of the night in December 2006, despite the family’s greatest efforts to rescue him in the minutes before he died away, Kohli saw his father’s tragic and unexpected death.

Kohli felt dead and blank, unable to process what had just happened in front of him as his sister, brother, and mother grew inconsolable. Maybe it was at this point when the Butterfly Effect took hold and cracked Kohli up inside. Kohli was playing for Delhi against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy a few hours before the death of his father. The following day, with his side struggling, Kohli was scheduled to bat.

“And then I called my coach in the morning, and I asked him, or I told him what had happened. He asked me ‘What do you wanna do?’. I said ‘I wanna go and play’. So he said, ‘Are you sure?’. And I was like, ‘yeah’. For me leaving a Cricket match was something which was not acceptable. Regardless of what happened in life,” Kohli had remarked in 2019, during an interaction with American journalist Graham Bensinger.

Kohli, though, was adamant about taking the field. Later that morning, rather than spending time mourning with his family and attending the funeral, he contacted his coach to tell him he wanted to continue batting practice as usual.

Kohli, undeterred, went on to hit 90 runs that day and voiced his displeasure with the umpire’s verdict that he was Out.
