"He is the best option to succeed Cheteshwar pujara at number 3" - Wasim Jaffer picks the long term replacement of Cheteshwar Pujara at number 3

Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian cricketer, has named current Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer as the “perfect” substitute for number 3 specialist Cheteshwar Pujara in upcoming Tests. Pujara and Iyer are both members of the Indian team competing in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.

Wasim Jaffer has spoken very highly of Iyer’s skills as a Test player. Jaffer claims that Iyer is an expert at making runs quickly and purposefully.

India is 2-0 up in the four-match Test series, meaning they have successfully defended their title and kept the prized Trophy. They’re on a roll and are projected to completely dominate the Australian team that is in town. Throughout the first two Tests of this series, Australia has failed to perform up to expectations.

The former opener felt that the No. 3 batting spot was pivotal in Test cricket to keep the side on track, make high totals, and set up a strong chase.

What did Wasim Jaffer say about Shreyas Iyer replacing Cheteshwar Pujara at number 3?

“I think Shreyas Iyer is the best option to succeed Cheteshwar Pujara at No.3. He has batted at No.3 for Mumbai and he is an attacking batter. If someone can come in at No.3 and score intently, putting the bowlers on the backfoot will do India a lot of good. Pujara has been brilliant at No.3,” the 45-year-old said while speaking in a video shared on his YouTube channel.

As far as his reputation goes, Iyer hasn’t messed it up. When batting at number 3, he has been outstanding. He has the ability to remain on the pitch for extended periods of time and speed up his scoring output when necessary.

Jaffer also singled out Cheteshwar Pujara, the seasoned batsman. He said that Pujara has been India’s mainstay at No.3 for a long time. Over and over again, India has benefited from Pujara’s ability to stay at the bat for long periods of time and keep scoring crucial runs.

When the 35-year-old cricketer eventually retires, the Indian team must select a competent replacement.

When Pujara reached 100 Test matches for India, he was just the ninth batter in Indian history to do so. Nevertheless, old age is working against him. In 2021, Shreyas Iyer played his first Test match at home, against New Zealand. In that series, the 28-year-old absolutely dominated.

After a nine-day hiatus, the third Test between India and Australia is taking place at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
