The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore is home to Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The Bangalore franchise is relying on a top-order heavy batting line-up, including the likes of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell, along with fast bowler Mohammed Siraj in IPL 2023.
RCB have registered four wins and three losses from their seven matches in the ongoing season. At home, the du Plessis-led side began with an 8-wicket win over Mumbai Indians before losing a close encounter with Lucknow Super Giants and bouncing back with a victory over Delhi Capitals. However, they later lost the Southern Derby by eight runs to Chennai Super Kings but won by seven runs against Rajasthan Royals. RCB will play their next home fixtures against Kolkata Knight Riders (April 26) and defending champions Gujarat Titans on May 21.
History of M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore
Formerly known as the Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium, the five-decade-old stadium is flanked by Cubbon Park. It holds a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators and is a regular venue for international matches besides the IPL. Owned by the Government of Karnataka, the stadium is leased to the state board for over 100 years.
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is the first to use solar panels to generate electricity to run the stadium. The panels procure the ‘Go Green’ initiative, supported by the RCB in the lucrative tournament. Interestingly, the stadium is one of the smallest in India, with 55 meters boundary in the front and 65 meters boundary length at the back. West Indies batting legends Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge made their Test debut at the same ground on November 22, 1974. The match was won by Clive Llyod’s side by a massive 256-run margin.
