“Umpires. Becoming obselette, like never before!” – Twitter reacts as ICC set to remove ‘Soft Signal’ forever starting from the WTC Final between India and Australia

There are a plethora of rules when it comes to the bat-ball game. Among the set of rules and regulations, there is this thing called “soft signal”, a decision which is made by the on-field umpire relating to a catch or a boundary.

The umpire’s call will come into the big picture when a fielder takes a catch but is doubtful whether it was a clean catch of if the ball had touched the ground being caught in safe pair of hands.

Besides that, about whether the catch was cleanly taken or if the ball touched the ground before being caught. On the other hand, the third umpire has every right to overturn the soft signal if there is enough evidence of the incident.

In case there is an insufficient evidence to overturn the soft signal, it is when the decision made by the on-field umpire stands. For the record, the concept of the soft signal basically applies to catches and boundary decisions during the passage of play.

ICC are set to remove ‘Soft Signal’ forever

Meanwhile, in the latest development, it has been learnt that the ICC are set to remove the soft signal forever. Yes, you read it right! The soft signal rule is going to be scrapped out from the rule book.

The change is expected to take effect from next month, at the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Team India and Australia at the Kennington Oval in London.

The soft signal rule triggers an on-field umpire to come to final decision, despite the fact that he is unsure, before taking the decision to the third umpire, who can only overturn if there is a clear evidence from the video.

The new rule change will happen from June 7 at the WTC Final, meaning that the third umpire will have the final call on doubtful catches and the on-field umpire will not make any decision on this whatsoever.
